Abandoned and derelict vessels (ADVs) threaten our ocean, coasts, and inland waterways by obstructing navigational channels, causing harm to the environment (fuel leakage, release of hazardous materials, and habitat disturbance), and diminishing commercial and recreational activities. ADVs can also be a nuisance, attract vandals, and negatively impact tourism. ADVs can present many financial impacts, including destruction of property, unpaid marina fees, and costly search and rescue missions.

The Virginia CZM Program originally convened a work group composed of diverse stakeholders (federal, state and local governments, NGOs, and industry) from 2021-2022 to understand the scope of the issue and provide policy
recommendations.

Virginia CZM Program staff continue to maintain a state-wide ADV inventory, respond to public inquirers about ADV removal resources, and continue to develop policy solutions, including streamlining coordination between public and private partners.    

You Can Help!  Please Report ADVs

People who are aware of abandoned boats in the water (not on land) are urged to report the presence of the vessel, so that the extent of the problem can be tracked.   

Report an ADV. 

You will be asked to provide information about the vessel, including the current location of the vessel and description of the vessel (length, color, name, etc.). You will be asked to create a FREE MyCoast account and will receive an email confirmation of your submitted report.  Virginia CZM staff also will receive an email from MyCoast once you submit your report.

Thank you! Your vessel report is a tangible contribution toward making the case for additional ADV funding as it helps to build the statewide inventory and helps government, non-profit, and industry partners to prioritize vessel removals.

Virginia CZM does not have the jurisdiction or funding to physically remove ADVs or require a state agency, locality, or private citizen to do so.
