During the 2026 General Assembly session, § 62.1-44.34:32 of the Code of Virginia was amended by Chapters 709 and 710 of the 2026 Acts of the Assembly. Effective July 1, 2026, the law requires quarterly discharge monitoring and reporting for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by specified categories of industrial users that are a source of indirect discharge to publicly owned treatment works (POTW). Additionally, POTWs are required to report the PFAS monitoring results from the industrial users to DEQ on a quarterly basis.
On June 30, 2026, DEQ hosted a webinar for POTWs to provide additional information and resources for the implementation of the legislation. View the webinar recording. The webinar presentation slides, resource document, and question summary document can be found under the Resources tab.
