The Chesterfield Power Station is located at 500 Coxendale Road in Chester, Virginia. The station has a new coal combustion residuals (CCR) landfill that currently manages dry coal ash from the station for disposal. The station also has two CCR surface impoundments that managed sluiced or wet CCR from the station.  The CCR impoundments at this facility (also known as coal ash ponds) and the landfill are subject to the EPA CCR Rule, and coal ash ponds are also subject to the requirements of §10.1-1402.03 of the Virginia Waste Management Act.

Closure of the Upper & Lower Ash Ponds

In February 2020, Dominion Energy Virginia submitted the required solid waste permit application for closure of the Upper and Lower Ash Ponds by CCR removal and groundwater monitoring. The application outlines the removal of ash from the ash ponds for disposal in the facility's permitted CCR landfill (SWP609), an offsite permitted landfill, or for transport offsite for beneficial reuse. The application estimates that it will take approximately 13 years to complete closure by removal activities.
