Under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), states, local governments, Tribal Nations, and coalitions of these entities became eligible to receive grant funding to implement community-driven solutions to reduce climate pollution.
Following a competitive application process, EPA distributed over $4.3 billion in July 2024 to mobilize 25 projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. DEQ cumulatively received $150 million between two awards: the Priority Methane Reduction Projects (PMRP) grant, and the Atlantic Conservation Coalition (ACC) grant.

Virginia Energy is reviewing applications to fund coal mine methane capture and/or utilization projects in Virginia. $79.5 million in CPRG funds will be awarded to proposals that reduce methane emissions associated with active and abandoned coal mines.
During the first round of applications for landfill methane (LFM) capture and/or utilization projects, DEQ awarded $6.6 million in CPRG subaward funds to one selected landfill. The Agency will also award up to $2.3 million in remaining CPRG subaward funds to one to two landfills for additional LFM capture and/or utilization projects. The second application round remains open through Aug. 10, 2026 at 5 p.m. View the second Request for Applications (RFA).
DEQ is also reviewing applications to fund edible food recovery and composting projects to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfills. The Agency will award $8 million in CPRG funds to selected subawardees for the implementation of proposed projects.
