Groundwater Withdrawal Publications and Resources

The history and evolution of the Groundwater Withdrawal Permitting Program is linked to the growth in the scientific understanding of the Virginia Coastal Plain aquifer system and the increased levels of impact seen from decades of groundwater withdrawals. The Office of Water Supply has had a long-term partnership with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to promote and expand the knowledge of the hydrogeology of the coastal plain aquifer system and the status of the groundwater resource.  The discovery of the Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater and the development of the current Coastal Plain and Eastern Shore Groundwater Models are examples of this partnership.

The publications and resources available on this page are focused upon the Eastern Shore and Eastern Virginia Groundwater Management Areas, where the withdrawals of groundwater are regulated in Virginia.  For information about groundwater resources statewide, see the DEQ Groundwater Characterization page.
