Water Well Registration Overview

On March 23, 2015 the Virginia General Assembly passed HB1871.  The Code of Virginia §62.1-258 requires that certified water well system providers submit to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality a water well completion report form for any private well constructed within a Virginia Groundwater Management Area within 30 days of construction.

In coordination with the Virginia Department of Health, an online reporting option is available for satisfying this requirement.   By submitting water well completion reports online through the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Online Reporting web application, VA Hydro, water well system providers can also satisfy reporting requirements under the Virginia Department of Health private well and waterworks regulations.  VA Hydro can be accessed using any mobile device as long as there is an internet connection available.  All reports submitted online become a historical record on state servers and will remain a permanent record for the water well system provider to access online at any time.

For questions on completing the water well completion report form and/or the well abandonment form, a water well registration guidance document has been created.  For questions regarding accessing the online reporting option (VA Hydro), reporting forms/guidance, or any other technical assistance matters related to water well registration please contact Curt Thomas at (804) 698-4024 or Previn Smith at (804) 698-4027.
