Groundwater Protection Steering Committee

North Creek: The first exceptional state water

Groundwater is such a part of our lives that we often take it for granted--it is 'out of sight, out of mind.'   As the state's population grows, groundwater is becoming an increasingly important resource. It is crucial that this resource be managed carefully.

The Office of Water Supply’s Groundwater Characterization Program  is tasked with collecting and interpreting technical information necessary for careful groundwater resource management. Groundwater withdrawals within Virginia's Coastal Plain are regulated through the Water Withdrawal Permitting Program and the Groundwater Withdrawal Regulations (9VAC25-610 et seq.). The Virginia Water Quality Assessment Integrated Report also includes a chapter on groundwater resources.

The Groundwater Protection Steering Committee is an inter-agency committee formed to stimulate, strengthen, and coordinate groundwater protection activities in Virginia. The Steering Committee, founded in 1986, includes State agencies with groundwater protection interests and the U.S. Geological Survey. The State agencies represented are DEQ, the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Department of General Services/Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services, and Virginia Cooperative Extension.

The Committee has not been active recently; however, it is DEQ’s intention to reactivate the Committee in the near future.
