Stop Work Lifted

Aug. 16, 2019: DEQ has lifted the stop work instruction issued on to Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC (MVP). The stop work instruction issued on Aug. 2 was based on issues identified during DEQ inspections that cited insufficient erosion and sediment controls on a two-mile section of the project in Spread H in Montgomery County.

Based on a DEQ inspection conducted on Aug. 1, DEQ determined that an imminent and substantial adverse impact to water quality was likely to occur as a result of land-disturbing activities. Specifically, MVP had failed to construct and maintain erosion and sediment control or pollution prevention measures in accordance with approved site-specific plans for the area, and the erosion and sediment control measures that had been installed were not functioning effectively.

Restrictions on work in the subject area may now resume as corrective actions have been installed by MVP and approved and verified by DEQ through field inspection. By law, once DEQ has verified completion of the corrective actions, the stop work instruction must be lifted.

Yesterday (Aug. 15), MVP suspended construction within the watersheds of the Roanoke Logperch and Candy Darter to address federal endangered species concerns.

DEQ will continue to monitor and inspect all areas of the pipeline to ensure the project remains in compliance. For more information, visit www.mountainvalleypipeline.info.
