Use latex low- or no-VOC paints

Definition: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.

Benefits: Acute health effects of VOCs include eyes, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, dizziness and worsening of asthma symptoms. Chronic health effects include increased risk of cancer, liver, kidney and central nervous system damage.

Use integrated pest management

Definition: US EPA defines Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as 'an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.'  Click here for more information on the US EPA's IPM.
