Environmental Project

Applications for the 2021 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards are now being accepted. The application period will end at 5 p.m. on December 9, 2020.

This category is intended to recognize activities or processes initiated by a facility or organization within the past five years that are directed at a single goal to improve the environment beyond what is required by regulation. Examples include, but are not limited to, projects aimed at reducing waste generation, water consumption and pollutant releases, increasing water reuse, green infrastructure, and use and access to clean energy; and adapting to the impacts of a changing climate. 

Judging Criteria for the Environmental Project Category:

Applicants should address each of the following criteria, making sure to include complete and concise answers that are responsive to the application questions.

  • Environmental and Economic Results: [50 points maximum]
  • Technical Value and Transferability: [20 points maximum]
  • Originality and Innovativeness: [20 points]
  • Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness: [10 points]


  • All environmental projects must have been developed and completed within Virginia to be eligible for this award.
  • At the time an application is submitted, the environmental project must have been in operation or have been completed for at least one full year. In lieu of this requirement, a project must demonstrate that it is already successfully and positively contributing to the Commonwealth's environmental protection and conservation efforts.
  • Each applicant must have a record of sustained compliance.
