DEQ’s Blue Ridge Regional Office staff recently began investigating the source(s) of petroleum contamination that has impacted multiple residential water supply wells in the Bedford County Route 24, Chamblissburg area.  DEQ’s initial response has been through our state lead contractor to supply bottled water and to install carbon filtration treatment to supply wells.  Preliminary site investigation has identified at least one property where gasoline contamination most likely originated.  The property is currently operating as the Chamblissburg Supply Store (dba Elei’s).  The property estate trustee has responded to DEQ’s initial request for underground storage tank release investigation and has hired an environmental consultant to begin site characterization.  DEQ has notified the local and state Health Departments of the situation.
