Project Title:

Coastal Zone Natural Landscape Assessment Update

Project Description:

The purpose of this project is to update the Coastal Zone portion of the Virginia Natural Landscape Assessment (VaNLA) utilizing updated field data created through FY 2016, Task 93.02 (Inventory of Important Biological Resources in the Chickahominy Watershed) and the new Virginia Statewide Land Cover Dataset released by Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) in February 2017.

In 2007, the Virginia Natural Heritage Program (VNHP), a division of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, completed development of a network of natural lands based on land cover data from 2001 for the entire commonwealth of Virginia.  FY 2014, Task 12 (Coastal Zone Natural Landscape Assessment Update) utilized 2011 National Land Cover Data with a spatial resolution of 30 meters to update VaNLA within Virginia’s coastal zone.  This revision will utilize land cover data that is not only six years newer but also with a much finer spatial resolution of 1 meter to update VaNLA within Virginia’s coastal zone.

This update is needed as an input to the next planned revision of the Coastal Virginia Ecological Value Assessment (VEVA), a comprehensive integration of conservation datasets and priorities developed to guide land use and conservation planning at the local government and planning district levels.  Ecological cores from the VaNLA are used to represent intact natural lands for multiple VEVA input datasets pertaining to rare species, natural communities, wildlife habitat, and water quality.  Also, a supplementary product of the VaNLA known as the Natural Land Network (NLN), is itself an input to VEVA.  The NLN, which shows the connectivity of natural lands throughout the commonwealth, includes all ecological cores with outstanding or very high ecological integrity, all of the landscape corridors that connect them, and all of the lower ranked cores and habitat fragments that intersect the corridors.
