Project Title:

Nansemond River Water Access at Constant's Wharf Park and Marina

Project Description as Proposed:

The project involves construction of a fully accessible canoe/kayak launch at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina.   Improvements will include a six-foot wide access pier, a 15’x15’ fixed platform, a gangway and a 30’x30’ floating dock.  Additional improvement will include designation of small drop-off/ADA parking area using existing driveways and walkways to minimize the impact of the project.

Presently, there are no public facilities for canoe and kayak access to the Nansemond River. (A facility at Bennett’s Creek Park provides indirect public access to the upper portion of the Nansemond River.) This facility would be conveniently located near Downtown Suffolk and provide access to the lower portions of the river.  The City is concurrently in the process of seeking funding to develop a second access at Sleepy Hole Park in Northern Suffolk.

Plans for public access to the Nansemond River are enthusiastically supported by a local non-profit organization called the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance.  An important initiative of the group is to publish a map of the Nansemond River as a part of the Captain John Smith Water Trail.  The map will highlight the river’s importance to the development and ecology of the City of Suffolk.   Public access to the Nansemond River is important to their efforts to educate and raise public awareness of the river.
