Virginia CZM Program Outreach & Publications 

Project Description as Proposed:

This task funds the Virginia CZM Program Outreach Coordinator position.  This position develops and implements targeted multi-media outreach strategies for the Virginia CZM Program to effectively communicate key CZM messages to the program’s many target audiences to raise awareness and increase understanding of coastal resource issues, encourage stewardship of Virginia’s coastal resources, and heighten the Virginia CZM’s visibility and unique position to coordinate solutions to cross-cutting coastal problems. 

This task also provides funds for producing, printing and distributing the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Magazine as well as other communication / education / marketing materials, as funding allows.

Specific deliverables include: a) design and implementation of Virginia CZM multi-media outreach strategies – submitted will be a summary report on implementation and outcomes of the strategies, b) development of new printed media and maintenance of existing media, c) coordination and/or delivery of hosted or co-sponsored events and training, and d) development of new and maintenance of existing digital media, including improvement and expansion of the Virginia CZM website.

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:

Public Campaigns, Events, Presentations (Product 1 & 3): 

• Regional Native Plant Campaigns:  Continued coordination of the “Plant ES Natives” campaign and facilitated expansion of the program’s regional native plant campaign work, including setting guidelines for development, implementation of - and collaboration among - Virginia CZM Program sponsored campaigns.  

• Collaboration with State Agencies and Other Partner Organizations on Native Plant Communication, Education and Marketing: Focused on efforts to encourage communication and collaboration among the program’s partners engaged in native plant marketing through the Virginia Native Plant Marketing Partnership, whose goal is more consistent messaging to the general public and greater efficiencies in the use of limited resources.  Collaborated with staff of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to host a May 2013 forum – Increasing the Use of Virginia Native Plants – Social Marketing, Collaboration and Coordination.  A fact sheet overview of the regional native plant campaigns and the Virginia Native Plant Marketing Partnership is downloadable from the Virginia CZM website at:  

• 2012 Virginia Coastal Partners Workshop: Along with Virginia CZM staff, planned and conducted workshop - theme focused on engaging stakeholders in coastal management. Workshop presentations are posted on the Virginia CZM website at

• Virginia Marine Debris Summit - February 2013:  Served on a planning committee coordinated logistics including: development and distribution of a pre-summit survey;  maintenance of the summit agenda and web pages; coordination of the registration process; design of the summit program; oversight of on-site registration.  (Summit funded in FY11, Task 95.02).
