Project Title:
Developing a Local Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan for Virginia Beach
Project Description as Proposed:
Rising sea levels and land subsidence make Hampton Roads the second most vulnerable area to floods and storm surge in the nation, behind only New Orleans. To prepare for these impacts, localities across the Hampton Roads region need to assess their economic, social, and environmental vulnerability to sea level rise and develop strategies to mitigate or adapt to these changes. In this project, HRPDC staff will work with the City of Virginia Beach to build on the previous climate change research completed by the HRPDC and develop a model for other localities to use when preparing for sea level rise. This project will consist of three main parts. The first will be a review of codes, ordinances, and plans inside and outside of the City of Virginia Beach related to flooding and sea level rise. The second will be the development of sophisticated maps and an online map viewer showing projected impacts of sea level rise. The third will be the creation of a strategy for public outreach to share projected sea level rise impacts and solicit public input for developing a sea level rise plan.
