Project Title:
Shoreline Inventory Reports for Tidewater Localities - Northampton County
Project Description as Proposed:
The Shoreline Inventory Reports, formerly known as Shoreline Situation Reports, are an important resource for local and state planners and regulators of Tidewater Virginia. The data collected enhances their ability to make decisions regarding coastal construction, land use planning, and implementation of environmental legislation. The data collected for the inventory supports the development of a number of essential management tools including spatial models and shoreline management plans.
The proposed project will collect and process data for Northampton County, at the southern end of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The last Shoreline Situation Report for this county was published in 1974. The CZM Program has been actively involved in generating products to enhance management of coastal resources on the Eastern Shore for several years. The seaside is the current target for much of their effort, and this proposed scope of work will, in part, provide data to support special area management for that region. Under this grant, data will be collected and processed. Quality assurance checks and measures will be implemented at designated phases of the processing. A complete county based Shoreline Inventory will be developed. These data will follow formats consistent with previous collections and be posted to VIMS’ CCRM website site entitled Chesapeake Bay Shoreline Inventory: http://ccrm.vims.edu/gis_data_maps/shoreline_inventories/index.html. Here maps, tables, a summary report of methods, metadata, and GIS data will be added to the growing list of completed Shoreline Inventories for Virginia localities. GIS data will also be made available on CD to VA CZMP for inclusion in Coastal GEMS.

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
This project produced a new Shoreline Inventory Report for Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The project expands the growing inventory of shoreline conditions along tidal shoreline in Virginia, and completes the inventory of shoreline conditions along Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Nearly 690 miles of shoreline were surveyed. The majority of the surveys were conducted on the bay side. Selected areas in the vicinity of built out environments on the sea side were also surveyed.
This Inventory was developed using GPS and GIS capabilities. Products are electronic in nature and no hard copy deliverables are submitted. A website has been created to serve the expanding inventories developed by the Center for Coastal Resources Management for the Chesapeake Bay Region: http://ccrm.vims.edu/gis_data_maps/shoreline_inventories/index.html. Each locality has an independent website accessible by clicking on the jurisdiction’s name. Links to maps, summary tables, reports and GIS data are all made available for public dissemination and use. Where available, historic reports may also be found.
Two cds that include all digital files and electronic reports have been delivered to CZMP in Richmond, VA. CDs have also been delivered to the locality and the Planning District Commission. The GIS data is compatible with formats used in CZMPs Coastal GEMS online map application.
The Shoreline Inventory Report Series provides critical information for documenting conditions along tidal shoreline and tracking trends in management decisions. The data are also important for evaluating best management practices and providing guidance for responsible shoreline management planning at the local level.
