Virginia CZM Program 2008 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary

Project Task:

Virginia Institute of Marine Science

Project Title:

Shoreline Inventory Reports for York & Newport News: Phase 2

Project Description as Proposed:

The Shoreline Inventory Reports, formerly known as Shoreline Situation Reports, are an important resource for local and state planners and regulators of Tidewater Virginia. The data collected enhances their ability to make decisions regarding coastal construction, land use planning, and implementation of environmental legislation. The proposed project will complete the Shoreline Situation Reports for the County of York and the City of Newport News. Data has been partially collected along sections of these jurisdictions. This project will provide funds to complete necessary field work, process all data, perform QA/QC, and generate and publish all elements of the electronic Shoreline Inventory Report for both communities. This includes maps, tables, summary report of methods, metadata, and GIS data which will be posted to a dedicated website maintained by the Center for Coastal Resources Management. GIS data will also be made available on CD to VA CZMP for inclusion in Coastal GEMS. The format for the website can be viewed at

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:

This project produced two new Shoreline Inventory Reports to expand the growing inventory of shoreline conditions along tidal shoreline in Virginia.  This year, money through the Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP) funded the completion of the City of Newport News Shoreline Inventory Report and the York County Shoreline Inventory Report.  Collectively, the assessment characterized more than 389 miles of shoreline; 157 miles in Newport News and 232 miles in York County.

This Inventory was developed using GPS and GIS capabilities.  Products are electronic in nature and no hard copy deliverables are submitted.  A website has been created to serve the expanding inventories developed by the Center for Coastal Resources Management for the Chesapeake Bay Region:  Each locality has an independent website accessible by clicking on the jurisdiction's name.  Links to maps, summary tables, reports and GIS data are all made available for public dissemination and use.  Where available, historic reports may also be found.
To the funding agency, a hardcopy of each accompanying report has been delivered along with cds that include all digital files.  The GIS data is compatible with formats used in CZMPs Coastal GEMS online map application.

The Shoreline Inventory Report Series provides critical information for documenting conditions along tidal shoreline and tracking trends in management decisions.  The data are also important for evaluating best management practices and providing guidance for responsible shoreline management planning at the local level.
