Curtis Merritt Harbor to Queen Sound Landing

Level of difficulty: Advanced

Route Description:

This trip should only be attempted by advanced paddlers, due to the busy recreational and commercial fishing activity along Chincoteague Channel. Intermediate paddlers should consider paddling out of East Side Landing and Fir Landing on Chincoteague Island and Tom's Cove at Assateague Island at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. About 4 miles.

Curtis Merritt Harbor to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (Toms Cove)

Route Description:

Advanced paddlers should only attempt this route near Chincoteague Inlet in ideal conditions. There may be strong currents and heavy powerboat traffic. Launch at the floating dock on the Southeast side of the Curtis Merritt Harbor. Be aware of powerboat traffic using this marina and heading in and out of Chincoteague Inlet. Paddle to the North side of the marked channel toward Tom's Cove. At channel marker #14 head East-Southeast into Tom's Cove. Explore the cove as conditions permit, keeping an eye out for Cow Nose Rays and wading birds. You can land on the sandy beach at Parking Lot 4 South of the Tom's Cove Visitor Center.
