Reduction of Toxics in State Waters Report - January 2012
On January 1 of each year, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality submits the "Reduction of Toxics in State Waters Report" to the House Committees on Conservation and Natural Resources and the Chesapeake and Its Tributaries, and to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources. The primary objectives of this report are to document the state's commitment to improving water quality. This commitment includes the prevention of contamination of the Commonwealth's waters by toxics, the continued monitoring of those waters for the presence of toxics, and the implementation of remedial measures to reduce and/or eliminate toxics found in the state's waters.
The annual report serves to keep the members of the General Assembly informed of the ongoing efforts to achieve these objectives and, as a public document, provides information not readily available in other forms. Although the reduction of toxics in the state's waters is primarily the responsibility of the Department of Environmental Quality, various agencies and organizations, including the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Health and the Chesapeake Bay Program, participate in the process. It is not possible to unite all available data on the state of toxics in the Commonwealth's waters in this report. Rather, its intention is to summarize the current activities directed toward toxics reduction and provide guidance to additional information on specific subjects.
The first Toxics Reduction in State Waters Report was submitted in January 1998, in accordance with Section 62.1-44.17:3. It is the hope of DEQ that the continued evolution of the reporting format, and the expansion of the report's comprehensiveness, will increase its utility to the State's legislators and to the general population.
