Superfund
In 1980 the U.S. Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (also known as Superfund) to clean up serious hazardous waste sites that are placed on the National Priorities List. The US Environmental Protection Agency administers the Superfund program in Virginia, and the Department of Environmental Quality performs necessary activities mandated by the Superfund law. DEQ is not involved in day-to-day activities. Superfund cleanups are progressing as scheduled in Virginia.
