Recycling and Litter Prevention

Recycling & Litter Prevention Home Page

Welcome to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality's
Recycling and Litter Prevention Program homepage.

The Recycling and Litter Prevention program is part of DEQ's Division of Environmental Enhancement, which also includes The Waste Tire Management Program, The Pollution Prevention/Environmental Excellence Program, the Coastal Resources Program and the Environmental Impact Review Program.

The Recycling and Litter Prevention Program manages the distribution of annual grants to localities for recycling and litter activities, provides information and guidance on recycling and litter prevention topics, tracks and reports on Virginia's recycling programs, and works with localities, other state agencies and environmental groups to promote environmental awareness through recycling and litter prevention programs.

The Recycling and Litter Prevention Program works closely with recycling program managers, as well as with local governments and solid waste planning units to ensure that their recycling programs are able to meet or exceed the state's mandated recycling rates.  Staff also works with the Virginia Recycling Markets Development Council to identify opportunities to strengthen the state's recycling infrastructures.

EPA and EPA Region 3 have provided opportunities for Virginia to meet with its neighboring states to discuss common recycling concerns, and through the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of Recycling and Economic Development Officials (MACREDO) , a forum for maximizing recycling markets information exchanges.

Use the links provided to access specific information about Virginia's Recycling and Litter Prevention Program activities.
