The University of The Virginia Beach Convention Center is located just 3 blocks from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. It features over 516,000 square feet of convention and meeting space. The facility features sustainable building materials, energy efficient systems, and other environmentally-sensitive design elements. The facility management demonstrates a sincere commitment to reduce the environmental impacts of its operations.

Details:
- Recycling - active recycling of paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Items are collected in pre-function spaces, offices, meeting rooms and all back of house spaces. Commingled materials are compacted and transported to an off site sorting facility.
- Battery recycling from all touch less plumbing devices.
- Mercury is captured from proper disposal of fluorescent lamps via an on site disposal system.
- Several lights have been switched from incandescent lamps to a more compact and energy efficient fluorescent lighting.
- State-of-the-art energy management systems for HVAC and lighting throughout the building.
- Glass system is energy efficient and uses ceramic frit to limit solar energy penetration in large pre-function spaces.
- Lighting & HVAC systems programmed based on event schedules to minimize usage during non-peak times and conserve energy.
- Non-essential items turned off when spaces not in use such as escalators, video walls and similar items.
- Landscaped property with over 2,000 trees and shrubs on a 50-acre site
- Automated irrigation system measures rain and limits irrigation demand.
- Storm water is retained on site and mitigates impervious surfaces of building and pavement.
- Use of renewable resources in the construction such as Cumaru for wood for floors, Meeting Suite veneers, and outdoor decks.
- Use of recycled paper for promotional materials.
- Aggressive carpet maintenance program to maximize the life of wool and nylon carpets
- Food overages are donated to a local shelter for the homeless.
- Use of bio-degradable Fabrikal Greenware products in concession stands.
