Chincoteague Comfort Suites is a participating member of EnvironmentaLodging, Virginia's initiative to promote pollution prevention and other environmentally-friendly techniques in the hospitality industry. Chincoteague Comfort Suites is located on Chincoteague Island along Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Chincoteague Comfort Suites has committed to the following practices that are helping to minimize their impact on the environment; and hopefully, some of these practices are saving them money as well!
Water efficiency
- lowflow restrictors (high pressure)
- low flow toilets
- maintenance of drips and leaks
Energy efficiency
- solar panels/sky lights/natural lighting design
- lighting sensors & high efficiency compact fluorescents
- insulation & stormwindows
- energy efficient building design w/tinted windows & building orientation to minimize cooling & heating needs
- directional lighting (parking areas, outdoor, non-dome lights that do not cause energy-wasting light pollution)
Landscaping
- integrated Pest Management (having a plan to use only what is needed)
- organic fertilizers & efficiently timed applications
- buffer strips around all water bodies
- use of native vegetation (ex.BayScapes)
The Room
- optional laundry service
- efficient HVAC - individual thermostats
- optional free papers
Meeting Rooms/Dining
- food inventory management - effective bulk purchasing
Laundry
- water efficient washers - those that reuse or filter washwaters.
- energy efficient dryers
- environmentally-friendly detergents - using proper amount of bleaches
- linen segregation - gentle cycles for lightly soiled (reduces linen wear)
Office
- recycles ink cartridges
- extensive use of electronic documents and records
- shredding of used paper for packing / shipping
Maintenance
- preventative maintenance of all vehicles and equipment
- eliminating use of aerosols
- covering, distilling, and reusing solvents
- use of latex paints
- effective systems of storage, labeling, handling
- plug drains in maintenance shops so that spills not discharged to sewer/ stormwsewer
Sustainability
- furniture made from bamboo or other sustainable crops
