Central Shenandoah Valley B&B Association “Goes Green”!
On July 16, 2007, Virginia Green Lodging Coordinator Tom Griffin presented plaques to 8 bed and breakfasts in a ceremony at the Side of the Road Bed & Breakfast in Harrisonburg. At meeting earlier in the Summer, the Central Shenandoah Valley B&B Association had agreed that it would be good for all of their members to consider joining; and nearly half of their members have already joined! Owners Janice and Dennis Fitzgerald organized the meeting which allowed Virginia Green Coordinator Tom Griffin to reduce his impact on the environment by only traveling to 1 spot! J
The following CSVBBA members have joined:
- By the Side of the Road B&B, Harrisonburg
- Grandma’s Cottage B&B, Port Republic
- Joshua Wilton House Inn & Restaurant, Harrisonburg
- Lady Rockingham B&B, Elkton

- Shenandoah Valley Inn, Staunton
- Belle Hearth B&B, Waynesboro

Is Your Facility Ready To Go Green?
Virginia Green is Virginia ’s new initiative to promote environmentally-friendly practices in Virginia ’s Tourism Industry. Virginia Green is supported through a partnership between the VHTA, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality; and it is meant for ALL tourism-related facilities. The partnership hopes that the Virginia Green logo will soon become a “brand” that is associated with all Virginia facilities who care about the environment. And we hope that visitors to Virginia will be anxious to “Go Green” in Virginia .
Virginia Green Lodging is the first of the Virginia Green programs, and it recognizes hotels, B&Bs, and other lodging facilities that are meeting the program’s minimum criteria. The partnership is now considering Virginia Green programs for many of the other hospitality components – Restaurants, Campgrounds, Attractions – even Golf Courses, Wineries, and Travel Organizations. We are helping to establish “green criteria” right now for each of these components. If you are ready to “go green”, let us know!

A “profile” has been developed for each of these facilities, detailing all of a given facility’s “green practices”. The Virginia Green Lodging profiles now appears on the website -- www.deq.virginia.gov/p2/lodging -- which is linked with the Virginia tourism website at Virginia.org so that potential visitors will know what to expect when they visit. Each of these facilities will receive a membership plaque for display at their facility, and new Virginia Green window decals are now being developed to help show your pride for “going green”! Congratulations to our newest Virginia Green Lodging participants!
It’s a New Day for the Virginia Green Lodging program!
As many of you are aware, we’ve changed the rules with newly-“re-introduced” Green Lodging program. The program is still completely voluntary, however, we now have established “Core Activities”. What are the Core Activities? To be a part of the program, you must now “certify” that you are at least practicing the Green Lodging Core Activities. Every facility that was previously in the program needs to contact Tom Griffin at rtgriffin@deq.virginia.gov to let us know whether or not you have the Core Activities in place.
