Staff at the Roanoke office of the DEQ Blue Ridge Region participated in an electronic waste recycling event on May 26. About 20 employees, along with family and friends, took materials for recycling to the DEQ office for pickup by an electronics recycling company.
Large items recycled include eight televisions and computer monitors and four microwave ovens. Enough smaller items to fill a pallet-size bulk box also were collected. The smaller items included cell phones plus chargers, personal computers, digital cameras, stereo equipment, rechargeable batteries, power tools, answering machines, networking gear, computer hard drives, cordless telephones, keyboards, printers, scanners and other items.
The e-waste was picked up by Synergy Recycling of Madison, N.C., at no charge. The company has
earned ISO 14001:2004 certification for its environmental management system. All material is
processed at the Synergy plant in Madison. Synergy offers free pickups to businesses with at least
a pickup-truck load of material. BRRO is planning another event in the late summer or early fall.
