Recycling and Litter Prevention

Welcome to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality's
Recycling and Litter Prevention Programs homepage.
The Recycling and Litter Prevention programs are part of DEQ's Division of Environmental Enhancement, which also includes The Waste Tire Management Program, The Pollution Prevention/Environmental Excellence Program, the Coastal Resources Program, the Environmental Education Program, and the Environmental Impact Review Program.
The Litter Prevention Program manages the distribution of annual grants to localities for recycling and litter activities, provides information and guidance on litter prevention and recycling topics, and works with localities, litter prevention program managers, and environmental groups on improving awareness of how litter damages the environment. Program staff tracks and reports on how localities use their grants to support their litter prevention and recycling programs. DEQ staff works closely with the Litter Control and Recycling Fund Advisory Board on the grant programs.
The Recycling Program works closely with recycling program managers, as well as with local governments and solid waste planning units to ensure that their recycling programs are able to meet or exceed the state's mandated recycling rates. Program staff provides guidance on recycling topics and programs, tracks and reports on Virginia's recycling efforts, and works with localities, other state agencies and environmental groups to promote environmental awareness through recycling. Staff also works with the Virginia Recycling Markets Development Council to identify opportunities to strengthen the state's recycling infrastructures.
EPA and EPA Region 3 have provided opportunities for Virginia to meet with its neighboring states to discuss common recycling concerns, and through the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of Recycling and Economic Development Officials (MACREDO) , a forum for maximizing recycling markets information exchanges.
