GROUND WATER FESTIVALS:
In October the Office of Ground Water Protection and SWRO Office of Solid Waste supported local educational festivals aiming to improve students’ understanding of ground water resources. The festivals are organized and run by local volunteers for area sixth graders and their teachers. The festivals generally have six to ten “hands on” educational stations for the students; the educational message at each station is developed with select Standards of Learning in mind.
Five Ground Water Festivals were held in Northumberland, Lancaster, Buchanan, and Dickenson Counties. 675 students and their teachers participated. Local support was provided by Chesapeake Bay Garden Club, Mount Olive Baptist Church, Northern Neck Audubon Society, Northumberland Association for Progressive Stewardship, Peninsula YMCA, Rappahannock Garden Club, SAIF Water Wells Inc., Camp Kekoka, Tri Star Supermarket, Sal’s Italian Pizza, Northumberland High School Teachers for Tomorrow, Cumberland Plateau Regional Waste Management Authority, Breaks Interstate Park/Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Dickenson County Litter and Recycling Office, Buchanan County Litter and Recycling Office, Lonesome Pine Soil and Water Conservation District, Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Cumberland Plateau Health District, VA Dept of Mines, Minerals, & Energy, McClure and Russell Fork River Groups, Buchanan and Dickenson County Schools, Virginia Tech-Agricultural Extension Service, and Virginia Rural Water Association.
