Criminal Enforcement
Both the Commonwealth's Attorneys and the Office of the Attorney General prosecute environmental crimes in Virginia. Additionally, federal prosecutors can prosecute federal violations or state violations in delegated programs.
DEQ's Criminal Investigation Unit investigates possible criminal violations and supports the prosecution of environmental crimes. This Unit also coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies.
RESOURCE GUIDE FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMESThis guide was prepared by the Central Virginia Environmental Crimes Task Force.
