Shades of Green
What is Environmental Sustainability?
Being called "green" is a good thing these days. Green is an attitude of conservation and preservation. But it can be confusing and touches upon a whole host of issues and buzzwords – renewable energy, climate change, environmental footprint, pollution prevention, sustainability, green tourism… and learning about them can be overwhelming for adults and students. This kit introduces some key concepts to help students and classrooms take a step toward understanding the shades of green. Everyday actions add up, so remember each person can make a difference. Windows into A Green Virginia
This curriculum addresses Virginia's Science SOLs with emphasis on 6.9 - Resources, and includes cross references to other Mathematics and Social Studies SOLs. Students are invited to peer through metaphorical "Windows on the World" to examine key dimensions of developing sustainable communities. Topics include Energy, Water, Air, Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife, Land Use and Natural Hazards, and Green Building. The culminating activity will help students examine real problems, weigh facts and present views on current issues.
