Virginia eWaste Management Advisory Committee (VeMAC)

eCycling

In 2004, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) invited interested parties to serve on an electronics waste management advisory committee. This committee was asked to assist in the identification of the existing infrastructure available for the collection and recycling of this material, to ascertain the weaknesses and strengths of this infrastructure, and to review and comment on the regulatory framework which affects such recycling. The committee was also asked to offer recommendations to DEQ on how to facilitate and maximize the recycling of this material in the future.

Membership on this committee reflected the regulatory community, the collection and processing community, local government programs, the electronics industry, and citizens of the Commonwealth. The members were as follows:

VeMAC held its first meeting on April 27, 2004 in Richmond. The committee heard presentations by DEQ staff, local government electronics recycling program managers, EPA, an electronics industry association representative, and representatives from firms that collect and process electronics for recycling. The committee reviewed all the information, and after discussion, approved language to be developed into a document entitled Guiding Principles for eWaste Management in Virginia.
