CZMA Funding for Land Acquisitions in Virginia: 1991 - 2009

The Virginia CZM Program also distributes funding for acquisition awarded through the federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program.

The Program is in the process of developing a CELCP Plan for Virginia.  This plan will be required to receive future federal funding.  These plans outline land conservation priorities within the state’s coastal zone and an evaluation process for proposals submitted at the state level.

Go to CELCP for more details.

Section 306A of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act allows state CZM Programs to use up to 10% of their federal funds for acquisition of fee simple or other interests in land.

The Virginia CZM Program sets aside $200,000 each year for land acquisition. The Program seeks parcels that are in need of protection because they contain rare habitat types and because they afford opportunities for passive public access and public education.

Since 1991, Virginia CZM grants have resulted in the acquisition of over 2,349 acres.  Below is a table of land acquisition funded by Virginia CZM since 1991, including match funding.  For more detail on the purchase, a link is provided to a project description page.

If you have any questions about the Virginia CZM Program's land acquisition activities, please contact Laura McKay - (804) 698-4320.
