Virginia Coastal Program: 2006 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary

Project Task:

94.05

Grantee:

Dept. of Environmental Quality - Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program

Project Title:

Living Shoreline Landowner Guide

Project Description as Proposed:

Erosion has led to the armoring of many miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline and in some subestuaries, more than half of the shoreline has been hardened with bulkhead, riprap revetments, seawalls, and other types of shoreline armor. However, equal and in some cases better shoreline protection can be achieved with the relatively new technique of “living shorelines.” An alternative to hardening, living shorelines employ natural habitat elements to protect shorelines from erosion while also providing critical habitat for bay wildlife and water quality benefits. Living shorelines may incorporate materials that include marsh plantings, shrubs and trees, low profile sills and breakwaters, strategically placed organic material, and other techniques that recreate the natural functions of a shoreline ecosystem.

This project will support development of a "Living Shoreline Landowner Guide" that can be distributed to interested landowners. Virginia CZM will be participating in a number of events and festivals in the near future and displaying information on the living shoreline concept. The guide will be available at these events and distributed to other organizations and individuals as requested. The landowner guide will be a color publication of at least 12 pages with photographs and graphics. The publication will be developed by Virginia CZM staff, with assistance from a steering committee. Funds will be used for printing.
