Virginia Coastal Program: 2006 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary
Project Task:
FY 2006 Task 50
Grantee:
Northern Neck Planning District Commission
Project Title:
NNPDC Green Roof Innovative Stormwater Treatment Demonstration Project
Project Description as Proposed:
The NNPDC, through a previous grant from the Chesapeake Bay Program in 2005, created a Low Impact Development Retrofit Demonstration Site at the NNPDC Office Complex in Warsaw, Virginia. Many elements of LID were utilized, rain gardens (vegetated bio-retention basins), an infiltration trench, filter strips, as well as rain barrels. Signage was created and installed that explains each of the LID features for self-guided tours. In addition, guided tours are available during business hours for interested parties.
In order to expand the usefulness of the NNPDC Office Complex as a demonstration site for innovative stormwater treatment technologies, the NNPDC proposes to install a green roof on one of the buildings in the complex. One of the older buildings in the complex has a flat roof, and is an ideal candidate for installation of a green roof. The NNPDC Office Complex is owned by the NNPDC, thus the land is publicly owned. Stairs and a deck will be built into one corner of the exterior of the building for easy access for examining the green roof treatment. Signage will be placed at the deck, explaining the soil material, construction and vegetation used in creating the green roof, as well as the benefits accrued from its installation.
