Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program Outreach and Publications
Project Description as Proposed:
This task funds the Virginia CZM Outreach Coordinator (OC) position and supports VA CZM outreach activities. The OC is responsible for development and implementation of an approved communication/education plan for the VA CZM. The OC will provide efficient and effective communication from the VA CZM Program to state, local and non-governmental partners, federal and state legislators, and the general public using social marketing techniques wherever possible. Program visibility will be achieved in part by improving grantee acknowlegment of the VA CZM’s coordination efforts and funding assistance. The OC will work with partner agency public affairs staff, as well as grantees, to identify opportunities to highlight VA CZM initiatives in press releases, events, publications, Web sites etc.
Ongoing activities include: publication of the Virginia Coastal Zone Management magazine and development of other brochures; strengthening the VA CZM’s relationship with the media; exhibit production and display; enhancement and maintenance of VA CZM Web sites; and, support to VA CZM and partner agency staff in development of coastal management workshops, training and other events. The OC will continue membership in communication/education planning groups, such as the Virginia Resource Use Education Council, and represent the VA CZM to regional groups such as the Eastern Shore Environmental Education Council and the Hampton Roads Alliance for Environmental Education. Finally, the OC will work with DEQ’s Director of Environmental Education to develop, promote and disseminate coastal environmental education curriculum materials for both K-12 and the general public through non-formal venues and providers.
