Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program Outreach and Publications
Project Description as Proposed:
This grant task
funds the Coastal Program Outreach Coordinator (OC) position and
supports Virginia Coastal Program (VCP) outreach activities. The
OC is responsible for development and implementation of an approved
communication/education plan for the VCP. The OC will continue to
focus on providing efficient and effective communication from the
VCP to state, local and non-governmental partners, federal and state
legislators, and the general public. Just as critical in FY05 however
is the need to improve the visibility of the VCP. This can be achieved
in part by improving partner and grantee acknowlegment of the VCP’s
coordination efforts and funding assistance. One way the OC hopes
to help achieve this in FY05 is to work with partner agency public
affairs and communication staff, as well as agency staff and grantees,
to identify opportunities to highlight VCP projects/initiatives
in press releases, events (e.g. kick-offs), publications, Web sites
etc.
Ongoing outreach activities in FY 05 will include: publication of
the Virginia Coastal Management magazine; strengthening the VCP’s
relationship with the media and production of press releases and
packets; production and display of VCP exhibits; enhancement and
maintenance of VCP Web sites; development of VCP Office public information
materials, such as issue fact sheets and brochures; and, support
to VCP and partner agency staff in development of coastal management
workshops, training and other events. The OC will continue to provide
publication assistance, e.g. publication development and acknowledgement
requirements, as needed to coastal partners and grantees.
The OC will also continue to coordinate with non-governmental coastal
resource communicators and educators through membership in communication/education
planning groups, such as the Virginia Resource Use Education Council,
and represent the VCP to regional communication groups such as the
Eastern Shore Environmental Education Council and the Hampton Roads
Alliance for Environmental Education.
Finally, the OC will work with the Director of Environmental Education
to develop, promote and disseminate coastal environmental education
curriculum materials.
