American Lung Association of Virginia
Project Title:
Clean Commute Day 2006
Project Description as Proposed:
Clean Commute Day is a daylong event designed to encourage the public to travel to and from work, school or other locations in modes that reduce air pollution and reliance on a single-occupant vehicle. The event also helps educate the public on the link between clean air and transportation.
The American Lung Association of Virginia and the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program have been working together along with other stakeholders over the past three years to increase the number of Virginians participating in Clean Commute Day activities.
This year the desire is to enhance the program to reach the public through a media campaign in selected communities. This project will fund the production and placement of 21” x 72” exterior bus signs placed on the back of the buses to help promote Clean Commute Day in Richmond. Each sign will encourage participation in Clean Commute Day and acknowledge the funder using the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program Logo.
Twenty bus signs will be placed for four weeks beginning April 12, 2006 with the Greater Richmond Transit Company. The project will also fund an estimated 50 paid radio announcements during Richmond traffic reports to help promote the statewide event.
The media project is anticipated to reach 1 million central Virginia residents with a Clean Commute Day message. In addition, event banners with the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program logo will be posted at four Clean Commute Day events in the Richmond area.

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
Clean Commute Day 2006 took place on May 5th in Charlottesville, Hampton Roads, Richmond and Roanoke and on May 19th in Winchester. These events are designed to encourage the public to travel to and from work, school or other locations in modes that reduce air pollution and reliance on single-occupant vehicles. This project provided funding to place twenty 21” x 72” exterior bus signs on buses, four event banners and fifty radio advertisements in the Richmond metro area to increase awareness and participation in Clean Commute Day activities.
The Richmond event attracted approximately 100 people and included formal presentations by Secretary of Transportation Pierce Homer and DEQ Director, David Paylor. Additionally, fifty-six individuals signed up online through our website www.cleancommuteva.org Media experts anticipated that 300,000 central Virginia residents were reached with a Clean Commute Day message as a result of this project.
The day was beautiful across Virginia which encouraged participation. The numbers below represent individuals that visited scheduled events in the other communities involved:
Charlottesville 50
Hampton Roads N/A
