Continuing Analysis of Shore Evolution in Jurisdictional Dune Localities-Phase II

Project Description as Proposed:

As part of the multi-year dune inventory, classification, and monitoring program, shore evolution has been documented in many of the Dune Act’s jurisdictional localities through orthorectification of historic and recent aerial photography. These localities are Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Northampton, Lancaster, Northumberland, Mathews, and Hampton. For each of these localities, 4-5 sets of aerial photography taken between 1937 and 2002 were scanned, orthorectified, and the shoreline digitized to produce maps that show the geomorphic evolution of the coastal zone in terms of shoreline change and landuse as well as nearshore variations in sandbars and shoal where present. We propose continuing this process for 1) the last jurisdictional dune locality (Accomack) as well as for 2) the non-jurisdictional localities identified in previous studies as having significant potential dune impact from non-management (Middlesex and Westmoreland). In addition, final reports will be presented for those localities still in draft form (Norfolk, Hampton and Mathews).

As part of the multi-year dune inventory, classification, and monitoring program, shore evolution has been documented through orthorectification of historic and recent aerial photography.  For Accomack, Norfolk, Hampton, Mathews and Westmoreland, 4-5 sets of aerial photography taken between 1937 and 2002 were scanned, orthorectified, and the shoreline digitized to produce maps that show the geomorphic evolution of the coastal zone in terms of shoreline change and landuse as well as nearshore variations in sandbars and shoal where present.  Middlesex has 1937, 1994, and 2002 data.  Norfolk, Hampton, and Mathews Shoreline Evolution Reports show the main coast for the entire county.  Accomack, Westmoreland, and Middlesex Dune Evolution Reports only show the sections of shoreline where dunes are present.  The marsh shorelines of Accomack were difficult to represent through plates.  Westmoreland and Middlesex, as non-jurisdictional localities outside the Dune Act, had a limited of dune sites with a wide spatial distribution.  All photo mosaics, digitized shorelines, baselines and shoreline change transects are archived in ArcMap.  


The Shoreline Evolution Reports have been posted on VIMS’ Shoreline Studies Program website along with general dune information as well as other dune reports.  The reports can be found at http://www.vims.edu/physical/research/shoreline/cbdunes/ under additional studies.
