Virginia Coastal Program: 2004 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary
Project Task:
FY 2004 Task 93.01
Grantee:
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
Project Title:
Database Enhancements for Inputs into Blue and Green Infrastructure
Project Description as Proposed:
This project will focus on improving the quality of the species location and distribution data available for use in other projects, including the Blue/Green Infrastructure and the INSTAR Project. The models being created are only as good as the data going into them. Much of the species location information has been provided by the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. However, due to the loss of staff during the budget cuts, the VDGIF has not been able to computerize many species locations records that have been received in the past few years. This grant would provide part-time data entry help to update the species location information for an additional 9 months. The deliverable will be an improved GIS dataset of species locations in the coastal zone. In order for Virginia to succeed in coordination of terrestrial and aquatic resource management (the Virginia Coastal Program's Integration Strategy), it must use the best data available. The improved GIS data set created during this project would be disseminated to all coastal zone partners for their use in the Integration Strategy.

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) maintains a large database of wildlife species locations called Collections. Data from Collections are used for a variety of purposes including: environmental review, determining species distribution or range, and as input into various models. The Blue and Green Infrastructure initiatives are projects that use species locations, along with other datasets, to identify water and land areas that are priorities for conservation attention. The INSTAR project, conducted by Virginia Commonwealth Universities’ Center for Environmental Studies, ranks the biological integrity of streams using the variety and abundance of aquatic species present. VDGIF uses known locations of threatened or endangered species to protect essential wildlife habitat through the state environmental review process. All of these efforts use wildlife species locations from the Collections database. The Collections database is primarily available through the VDGIF’s Virginia Fish and Wildlife Information Service (www.vafwis.org), a comprehensive source of wildlife information in Virginia.
