Virginia Coastal Program: 2004 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary
Project Task:
FY 2004 Task 41
Grantee:
Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission
Project Title:
ANPDC Coastal Resources Technical Assistance Program
Project Description as Proposed:
The Accomack-Northampton
Planning District Commission serves the two counties and 19 incorporated
towns on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Population on this narrow,
70-mile long peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake
Bay grew by 7.3 percent between 1990 and 2000, for a total of 51,398.
Increasing residential development in northern Accomack County and
southern Northampton County is focused on waterfront areas. In response
to the increased development, the A-NPDC will form the Eastern Shore
of Virginia Coastal Management Committee to coordinate local government
efforts to better manage coastal development. Through the Coastal
Management Committee, the A-NPDC will offer coastal management training
opportunities for local government staff and develop a Chesapeake
Bay Preservation Act Best Management Practices Maintenance Agreement
for local governments.
The A-NPDC will participate in implementation
of the Eastern Shore Tributary Strategy, including assistance with
GIS data and analysis. The A-NPDC will staff the Eastern Shore of
Virginia Ground Water Committee, provide GIS services, conduct state
and federal environmental reviews, and work with local governments
and organizations to develop heritage tourism activities. The expected
outcome will be improved coastal management on the Eastern Shore
of Virginia.
