Project Title:
Land Acquisition Plan for CELCP Funding
Project Description as Proposed:
The Virginia Coastal
Program will hire a contractor (to be determined) to develop a priority
plan for land acquisition. Future funding for land acquisition is
anticipated to be available through the Coastal and Estuarine Land
Conservation Program. There are already in existence various prioritization
schemes for land acquisition in Virginia. The Department of Conservation
and Recreation, The Nature Conservancy, and the Virginia Association
of Land Trusts have developed such schemes. There may be others
as well. This project will collect and assess all existing schemes
for Virginia and choose the best one from which to begin. This scheme
will then be modified to fit Virginia’s coastal zone and Virginia
Coastal Program priorities. These priorities will be agreed to by
the Coastal Policy Team and may rely heavily on the Virginia Coastal
Lands Assessment (see Task 95.01) which identifies the best remaining
coastal hubs and corridors.
In addition, the Virginia Coastal Program will meet and work with
neighboring states such as Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and North
Carolina to try to identify and coordinate regional needs. By taking
a regional view, we hope to better identify lands that will serve
to protect regional resources such as bird migration corridors and
stopover habitats, other wildlife migration corridors and lands
that could serve to connect interstate water trails, for example.
