Virginia's Coastal Resources Management Program Outreach
Project Description as Proposed:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Outreach Coordinator develops and provides overall coordination of the outreach plan to ensure that program information reaches government agencies, private organizations, and the general public. This position also helps ensure that critical issues and policy priorities are communicated among the program's local and state partners. In FY 2000, the Outreach Coordinator will work with the program's partners and grantees to develop publications including the Virginia Coastal Program News newsletter, Virginia Coastal Program Projects Catalogue, press releases, and fact sheets. The Coordinator also identifies opportunities to coordinate and implement public information and education activities and events with the program's federal, state, and local partners, thereby promoting and improving the efficient and complete dissemination of information related to coastal resources issues and Virginia's Coastal Program.

In
addition to providing general program support and information to
the general public and local and state agencies, the Outreach Coordinator
has planned, coordinated and/or participated in the following activities:
Virginia Coastal Program Newsletter - Two issues of the Virginia
Coastal Program News were printed and distributed in FY 2000. (Fall/Winter
- November, 2000; Spring/Summer, July, 2001). These newsletters
are available on-line at http://www.deq.virginia.gov/coastal/publicat.html.
Virginia Coastal Program Projects Catalogue: On-line edition of
the Virginia Coastal Program Projects Catalogue has replaced hardcopy
edition. On-line edition includes summaries of coastal funded projects
and activities, including a description of printed materials available
for public distribution. (Go to http://www.state.va.us/coastal/publicat.html)
A contact name, phone number and e-mail link is provided for each
project. Grant project managers are primarily responsible for the
distribution of all documents highlighted.
Virginia Oyster Heritage Program (Coastal Program Focal Area): In
addition to preparing for and participating in exhibits and press
events for the VOHP, the Coordinator continued to maintain, distribute
and display VOHP material, including a brochure, bumper sticker,
banners, exhibits panels, t-shirt, education materials (Amazing
Oysters and Build A Reef) and a costumed character - "Omar
of the Reef"; and, generated new materials including aerial
maps, tattoo, and 3-D reef model. A sample of the tattoo and photo
of the new model were previously submitted with April-September
2001 progress report.
Web Site: The Coordinator maintained and periodically redesigned
the Virginia Coastal Program Web site (www.deq.state.va.us/coastal/),
and Virginia Oyster Heritage Program Web site (www.deq.state.va.us/oysters/).
The Coordinator also designed a new Web site for the Virginia Clean
Marina Program (www.deq.state.va.us/vacleanmarina/).
Coastal Program Exhibits: The Coordinator organized and/or attended
program exhibits at the following October 2000 - September 2001
events. Exhibits were coordinated with Coastal Program partners
when possible:

Other Special Projects of Note: The Coordinator assisted in preparation
and orchestration of a kick-off event for the new Virginia Clean
Marina Program, including design of pledge certificate, and guided
development of a Clean Marina Program logo and program display.
The Coordinator also began preparations for the 2001 Virginia Coastal
Partners Workshop to be held in December 2001, including procurement
of, and negotiations with, a conference facility, and design and
distribution of a save-the-date card and conference brochure.
The Coordinator assisted the Coastal Program Manager in speaker
recruitment for the 2001 Virginia Sustainable Future Conference,
and partnered with the DEQ Environmental Education Coordinator on
a public information/education pre-workshop before the conference.
