Project Title:

Accomack-Northampton Coastal Resources Management Project

Project Description as Proposed:

This proposal requests $25,000 in VCRMP funds for the Accomack-Northampton Coastal Resources Management Project. The VCRMP funds will be matched with $25,000 in local and other funds. A total of $25,000 in VCRMP funds is requested for Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission (A-NPDC) staff support to provide planning assistance for coastal management, town planning, eco-tourism development, GIS implementation and ground water planning.

Reports entitled "Water Quality Data Workshop Report", "Household Water Pollution Prevention Workshop Report", "Bloxom Town Plan", "Town of Exmore, Virginia Technical Analysis Land Use & Water Quality Protection Plan For the Comprehensive Plan", and "Town of Eastville, Virginia Comprehensive Plan."

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:

Tributary Strategy Implementation. A-NPDC staff hosted and participated in Eastern Shore Tributary Strategy meetings, which resulted in the formation of the Eastern Shore Watershed Committee. The Watershed Committee is focusing on water quality monitoring in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The A-NPDC conducted a Water Quality Data Workshop on November 28, 2000 to identify local, state, and federal water quality data sources and needs.

Coastal Resources Management GIS Plan Implementation. A-NPDC staff began implementing the Coastal Resources Management GIS Plan by organization and staffing the Eastern Shore GIS Committee. The GIS Committee holds regular meeting to share data, provide staff development, and improve the Eastern Shore's GIS capability. A-NPDC staff coordinated a two-day Arc View GIS training program at Eastern Shore Community College August 1 and 2, 2000.

Town Assistance Program. A-NPDC staff provided planning assistance to incorporated towns in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance Department, and updated the Bloxom, Eastville, and Exmore Town Plans.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Public Service Authority. The A-NPDC staffed regular meetings of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Public Service Authority (PSA), hired a consulting engineer, and identified possible projects to undertake.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Ground Water Committee. The A-NPDC staffed the Eastern Shore of Virginia Ground Water Committee, managed the consulting hydrogeologist, reviewed and commented on Draft DEQ Ground Water Withdrawal Permits and continued project management of the EPA grant to evaluate the water supply in economically disadvantaged communities.

Eastern Shore Eco-Tourism Workshop. A-NPDC staff produced the 2000 Eastern Shore Heritage Tourism Workshop on June 6, 2000.

Home Owner Water Pollution Reduction Workshop. A-NPDC produced the Household Water Pollution Reduction Workshop on November 30, 2000.
