Coastal Program Outreach Activities

Project Description as Proposed:

This project provides continued funding for the Outreach Coordinator and support for outreach activities. The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for coordination and implementation of a communication and education plan. The Program has a continued crtical need for efficient and effective dissemination of program and coastal management information among its state and local partners and information outreach to the general public. The Outreach coordinator serves as the Editor and coordinates publication of the Virginia Coastal Program News, issued three times per year. Other activities include: the Projects Catalogue; production of a general program brochure; maintenance of displays (including development of new materials and participation in state and local events); development of articles for publication in local, national and international coastal publications and press releases; redesign and updates to the Progam's website; and, development or participation in workshops, training, or events related to coastal zone management issues, or outreach. The Outreach Coordinator also assists the DEQ Education Coordinator with the promotion and dissemination of coastal environmental education curriculum materials.

In addition to providing general program support and information to the general public and local and state agencies, the Outreach Coordinator has planned, coordinated and/or participated in the following activities:

Virginia Coastal Program Newsletter: One issue of the Virginia Coastal Program News was written and designed in the 1999 grant year, and printed and distributed in FY 2000. (Fall/Winter - December, 2000).

Virginia Coastal Program Projects Catalogue: On-line edition of the Virginia Coastal Program Projects Catalogue was produced, which includes summaries of coastal funded projects and activities, including a description of printed materials available for public distribution. (Go to www.state.va.us/coastal/publicat.htm) A contact name, phone number and e-mail link is provided for each project. Grant project managers are primarily responsible for the distribution of all documents highlighted.

Virginia Oyster Heritage Program (Coastal Program Focal Area): In addition to preparing for and participating in exhibits and press events for the VOHP, the Coordinator worked with the Program Manager and VOHP partners to produce a revised and expanded fact sheet and video about the program and coordinated the design and production of a VOHP bumper sticker, banners, aerial maps, exhibits panels, t-shirt, educational publication (Amazing Oysters) and costumed character - "Omar of the Reef".

Web Site: The Coordinator designed a new Web site for the Virginia Coastal Program. The program Web pages now have a more unique appearance and provide expanded information. (www.deq.state.va.us/coastal/) The Coordinator also maintained a website for the Virginia Oyster Heritage Program (www.deq.state.va.us/oysters/)

Coastal Program Exhibits: The Coordinator updated the Virginia Coastal Program programmatic display and purchased additional display hardware; expanded and maintained the Virginia Oyster Heritage Program display; and designed an interactive display for children on oyster reefs - "Build a Reef".

The Coordinator also organized and/or attended program exhibits at the following October 1999 - September 2000 events. Exhibits were coordinated with Coastal Program partners when possible:
