Project Summary Provided by Grantee:

The 2002 Green Sea Festival was held on October 12, 2002 at Munden Point Park in Virginia Beach. The Festival featured a broad range of educational and entertainment opportunities. Governmental agencies including Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, False Cape State Park, Great Dismal Swamp Refuge, the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Coastal Program and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about resource management efforts in the Southern Watershed Area. Other public and private groups including Hampton Roads' Water Efficiency Team, the Old Dominion Earth Science Society, the Princess Anne County Historical Society, the Nature Conservancy, the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission, the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission, the Virginia Canal and Navigation Society, the Virginia Marine Science Museum Traveling Aquarium and Stranding Team and Wild Birds Unlimited provided additional educational opportunities. Other groups such as the Knitting Guild, Blacksmith Guild, Beekeepers and several other crafters provided information on the cultural history of the area.

Several local artists including Amy Ferebee, Jeanne Powell, Jason Swain and Zendiva provided musical entertainment. Zendiva is a three-person group that features environmental conservation themes in there music. All of the musician's fees were covered through corporate sponsorship. Corporate sponsorship for the Festival totaled $1,825.00.

In addition to the Festival a poster contest was held to help educate local children about the Southern Watershed Area. The contest was open to elementary school age children. Participants were invited to submit original artwork dealing with ecological themes. The winner's artwork was used in a poster to advertise the Festival.

Free television and newspaper coverage was obtained by the Festival Coordinator to advertise the Festival. This coverage provided an additional opportunity to educate the local population about the natural resources of the Southern Watershed Area.
