Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
The
Southern Watershed Area Management Program (SWAMP) is a partnership
between the Virginia Coastal Program, the Hampton Roads Planning
District Commission and the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
SWAMP is a collaborative effort to integrate protection of natural
and cultural resources with continued economic development in the
Southern Watershed Area (SWA). The SWA includes the watersheds of
the North Landing River and Northwest Rivers and Back Bay. Phase
IV of SWAMP has been completed and a written report documenting
activities and accomplishments during the period from October 1997
through September 1999 is available. The year-end report includes
the following:
1. The final report on the water quality data analysis for the SWA
by the Applied Marine Research Laboratory at Old Dominion University:
the report documents detailed analysis of temporal and spatial trends
and existing status of surface water quality in the Southern Watershed.
2. A status report on geographic information system development
for the SWA.
3. Draft modifications to the C-1 Conservation District in Chesapeake
and the P-1 Preservation District in Virginia Beach.
4. A report on the first phase of the development of a Strategic
Plan for Agriculture for Chesapeake and Virginia Beach: the report
documents research on several aspects of agricultural preservation
by a team of faculty members from Virginia Tech.
5. Information on education and public involvement activities including
the Second Annual Green Sea Festival.
6. A report on agricultural stormwater BMP inventory completed by
the Virginia Dare Soil and Water Conservation District.
7. Documentation on project management efforts and information on
future directions for SWAMP.
