Chesapeake Bay Watershed Habitat Conservation & Restoration Evaluation & Assessment Process

Project Description as Proposed:

Development of a comprehensive inventory and analysis of public and private habitat and restoration projects undertaken in the City and implementation of a habitat restoration project on steep slopes in the Bay watershed. The inventory will be utilized to build a data base of information which highlights project descriptions, locations, types of habitat area affected, and a methodology for assessing the success or failure of various plant materials and techniques utilized at the various sites. The demonstration project will document project design, management and transfer potential to similar sites in the Bay watershed.

Project Summary Provided by Grantee:

TMay 1, 2006 comprehensive inventory and analysis of public and private habitat conservation and restoration projects undertaken in the Chesapeake Bay watershed within the City of Virginia Beach. The inventory was utilized to build a database of information which highlights project descriptions, locations, types of habitat area affected, and a methodology for assessing the success or failure of various plant material sand techniques utilized at the various sites.

The project report summarizes the inventory and evaluation and assessment process and results collected from public and private conservation and restoration projects, accompanied by project design, management, and procedures to gauge the success or failure of past project, as well as offer guidance for future project location, design and management requirements.

The habitat conservation and restoration evaluation and assessment project accomplished the following goals: (1) development of a comprehensive inventory and analysis of all public and as many private habitat conservation and restoration projects undertaken in the city as possible; (2) development of a database of information which highlights project descriptions, locations, types of habitat area affected; and (3) development of a methodology for assessing the success or failure of various plant materials and techniques utilized at the various sites.
