Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
The
goal of "A Citizen's Guide to Tree Planting Projects in Northern
Virginia" is to empower citizens who have expressed an interest
in a tree planting project, including stream buffer reforestation,
with the necessary information and guidance to successfully initiate
and complete the project. The project was conceived out of talks
between the Northern Virginia Planing District Commission and Fairfax
ReLeaf, which expressed a need for a resource that provided a nuts-and-bolts
approach to tree planting in order to help them manage the large
number of citizens asking for help with tree planting projects.
The guide is divided into three pieces, including a cover and introduction,
which includes photographs of tree planting projects, and two jurisdiction-specific
pieces entitled "Getting Started and Getting Permission"
and Designing and Planning Your Project." Information includes
how to determine property ownership, how to get permission for the
property owner, who to coordinate with, how to sketch a planting
plan, how to choose planting materials, where to purchase native
vegetation, how to recruit volunteers, and how to conduct follow-up
maintenance. While the jurisdiction-specific pieces are geared towards
planting projects in Fairfax county, it is the intent of the NVPDC
to modify them for use in other jurisdictions as funding is available.
Distribution will take place in conjunction with Fairfax County's
recent 2,000 by 2000 tree planting challenge (each of the County's
nine magisterial districts are being challenged to plant 2,000 trees
by year 2000.) Fairfax County's program brochure refers interested
citizens to "A Citizens Guide to Tree Planting Projects in
Northern Virginia" for additional information.
Project contributors included Fairfax ReLeaf, Virginia Department
of Forestry, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District,
Fairfax county Park Authority, Virginia Department of Transportation,
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, Fairfax County Urban
Forestry Branch, and Fairfax County Virginia Cooperative Extension.
