Project Summary Provided by Grantee:
Because several local governments in the Coastal Plain have only hard copy, paper comprehensive plan maps, updating these maps can be costly and time consuming. With the advent of desktop GIS software packages (like ArcView) which can run on the average personal computer, updating maps is becoming an easier task. CBLAD, along with Timmons, has developed several Avenue scMay 1, 2006 which greatly enhance the functionality of ArcView. The scripts have been embedded into the graphical user interface of ArcView and will enable local governments to query, display, and produce maps associated with comprehensive planning with only a few 'mouse clicks'. Three localities were chosen to develop these scripts for - Caroline County, Charles City County, and King and Queen County.
The deliverables include a detailed user guide (available in WordPerfect and Microsoft Word formats) which covers installation, starting the ArcView Mapping Project, using the CBLAD functions and metadata. In addition, the deliverables include county soil data from the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) project, wetlands data from the National Wetlands Inventory (USFWS), a 1:24,000 scale USGS quadrangle index, watershed hydrologic units and county roads from VDOT.
Two ArcView project files were developed for both ArcView version 3.0 and 3.1, to ensure compatibility among users. The project allows user to map the following attributes: Prime Farmland, Building Suitability (Water Table Depth), Flooding Frequency, Highly Permeable Soils, Shrink-Swell Soils, Submerged Aquatic Vegetation, Watershed Units and Tidal/Non-Tidal Wetlands. This project was designed to query the data based on the 1:24,000 scale quad sheet. The user has the ability to choose individual quads based on name. In addition, the county roads data has been included and can be overlaid on the attribute data by selecting from a menu. Map templates were designed and embedded into the project which allows the user to print at either 8-1/2" x 11" or 11" x 17".
Caroline County has installed the project and is currently using the data to update their comprehensive plan. CBLAD staff is working close with Caroline to ensure the project functions as expected. Future plans include delivering the project to Charles City and King and Queen Counties.Disclaimer: This project summary provides the federal dollars initially awarded to the grantee.
