Virginia Coastal Program: 1997 Coastal Grant Project Description and Final Summary
Project Task:
FY1997 Task 1.05
Grantee:
Center for Conservation Biology - College of William & Mary
Project Title:
Enhancing Nature-based Tourism through Migration Resources & Public Education on the Lower Delmarva Peninsula
Project Description as Proposed:
Due to its geographic position, the lower Delmarva Peninsula is one of the premier locations in eastern North America to observe bird migration during the fall months. With further development, the ecotourism industry has the potential to have a positive impact on both the local economy and the conservation of habitats important for birds during migration. We believe that collecting information within current information gaps will lead to better habitat management programs and further development of the ecotourism industry on the lower Delmarva Peninsula. Toward that end, we propose 3 projects designed to 1) provide educational programs about Northern Saw-whet Owls while continuing to investigate their migration ecology and 2) document the migration of grassland/shrubland species to improve habitat management and to make the public aware of opportunities for viewing these species.
