In 2011, the Virginia CZM Program Office - engaged in development of regional native plant campaigns in Virginia's coastal area - reached out to partners also active in marketing Virginia native plants to initiate the Virginia Native Plant Marketing Partnership (VNPMP) - a forum to collaborate and coordinate, leading to more consistent messaging to the general public and greater efficiencies in the use of limited resources. The partnership is guided by a Steering Team of members representing organizations with a regional and state-wide mission and focus on native plant marketing.
Together the VNPMP complied the first edition of the Virginia Native Plant Marketing Partner and Resource Directory in an effort to provide a comprehensive compendium of current native plant marketing programs, initiatives and resources. Updates to this directory are ongoing.

To share the efforts and experiences of VNPMP members and to reach out to potential new members, the Virginia CZM Program Office and the program's networked partner the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries hosted a native plant workshop and forum - Increasing the Use of Virginia Native Plants: Social Marketing, Collaboration and Coordination - in May 2013. Feedback from participants in this forum was shared with the VNPMP Steering Team which has identified and prioritized collaborative activities or actions to increase the use of natives, including:
1) a Virginia conservation landscaping certification,
2) a framework and guidelines for native plant seed collection/propagation,
3) a centralized website for Virginia native plant marketing information and resources (this web page currently serves this function and the site will be expanded in future) and a collaborative web-based site to support partnership communication, and
4) highlighting native plants in the Virginia Nursery and Landscaper Association's 2014 "Virginia Growers Guide"
An outline, details and status of these projects will be posted on this webpage when available.
The next VNPMP meeting is tentatively scheduled for Feb 2014. Confirmation and more details will be posted soon.
